Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa for Hong Kong for study, employment, training, investment and residence?
As a general rule, any person other than those who have the right of abode or right to land in Hong Kong must obtain a visa before coming to Hong Kong for the purpose of study, taking up employment, training, investment or residence.
How long does an application under the General Employment Policy (GEP) take?
It normally takes four weeks to process visa and entry permit applications for employment upon receipt of all the required documents. All applications are processed and determined by the Immigration Department; approval is entirely discretionary and subject to changes in government policies.
How do I know if I am eligible to apply under the GEP?
An application may be favourably considered if there is no security objection and no known record of serious crime; the applicant has a good education background, normally a first degree in the relevant field (or, in special circumstances, good technical qualifications or proven professional abilities and experience); there is a genuine job vacancy; the applicant has a confirmed offer of employment in a job relevant to their qualifications or experience that cannot readily be taken up by the local work force; and the remuneration package is broadly commensurate with the prevailing market level for professionals in Hong Kong.
